Welcome to the Department of English…
English, the Global Language, is a language of opportunities in the present world immersed in Globalization. Every path of success passes through different skills of English Language. The study of language empowers the learners to be effective in presentation while the study of English Literature strengthens individuals to understand culture, people, social changes and their place in the society. The department of English through its Language and Literature courses is empowering the human resource for the national and global development.
The department runs UG courses offered by Shivaji University, Kolhapur. It runs two certificate courses, Pragmatic English and Basic English Grammar, which are approved by Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The department conducts Remedial Coaching for slow learners in the English studies. The English Literary association (ELA) provides a forum for the students of the department for curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as Poetry recitation, elocution competitions, debates and quizzes, surveys, etc.
The departmental library is rich with study material such as textbooks, reference books, Journals and e-material to pursue the passion of learning English Language and Literature. The Language Laboratory is part of the infrastructure to enable learning with the help of technology. The department has a record of meritorious students since its inception.

- Individuals with love and respect for literature in all its forms with abilities to appreciate linguistic beauty, critical analysis, thematic appreciation and the abilities to apply their critical skills for practical life.
- Individuals with passion for life, respect for other individuals and society in general, and possessed by patriotic vision and action for the same.
* Department Mission:
Enhance the liberal education of students by developing a deeper understanding of language and literature and nurturing among them the values of critical reading and creative writing, and introducing them with the richness of literature in the past and present.
* Objectives of the Department:
- To develop competencies in English Language among learners.
- To develop soft skills and communication skills among learners.
- To develop abilities to think critically about literary and non-literary texts and issues.
- To develop practical sense to handle social issue around them.
* Department Goals:
- To impart English communication skills to the students.
- To enable the students to use English language as a tool for employment and physical prosperity.
- To develop interest among the students regarding literature as a fine art.
- To inculcate aesthetic sense and human values among the students.
- To train students to read critically, write clearly and imaginatively, think logically, and speak articulately about literature and language.
- To promote critical literacy, that is, the capacity to interpret, evaluate, and contextualize literary and social text.
